Around a month ago I decided to turn on and start utilizing NFS v4. The reason why I did this was to test the new version out, and attempt to increase both throughput and redundancy in my environment.
Some of you may ask why I chose to use NFS? The overhead was horrible on the unit result of the lack of hardware specs on the NAS for both block and file access to iSCSI targets block target, vs virtualized fileio target.
NFS v4. As most of you iSCSI and virtualization people know, we want multipathing on everything. It provides redundancy as well as increased throughput. According to the VMware vSphere product documentation here. Depending on your network infrastructure and configuration, you can use the network stack to configure multiple connections to the storage targets.
In this case, you must have multiple datastores, each datastore using separate network connections between the host and the storage. NFS 4. Client ID trunking is not supported. This would peak when my ESXi hosts would restart. This issue escalated to the NAS running out of memory both physical and swap and ultimately crashing.
After weeks of troubleshooting I found the processes that were causing this. This resolved the issue. I created a blog post here to outline how to resolve this.

Well, not to worry because I am going to show you just how to enable the feature on your device. NFS v4 and v4. But unless your storage device supported the newer NFS versions, you would be stuck mounting NFSv3 volumes by default. This will show us the current NFS version currently enabled and supported by the Synology device.

DS Quad Core 1. DS bit H.Since SMB is supported by Windows, many company and home networks use it by default. I will show you a basic benchmark based on read and write operations with both protocols.
The NAS device will be the target for read and write operations. All devices are connected over LAN. An important difference between both protocols is the way they authenticate. NFS uses the host-based authentication system. This means that every user on an authenticated machine can access a specific share.
However SMB provides a user-based authentication. As you can see below I have restricted read and write access to the network segment You might split your network segment into two regions. The upper hosts might get read access whereas the lower hosts might get additionally write access. Just play around and find the configuration which meets your requirements. The SMB share can be mounted without any additional Software. Others need 3rd-party software to access NFS shares.
The provided driver is not digitally signed!

As you can see NFS offers a better performance and is unbeatable if the files are medium sized or small. If the files are large enough the timings of both methods get closer to each other. Sadly most Windows users are forced to use SMB. Tags: nas nfs smb. November 19, June 1, However, SMB is more or less a Microsoft protocol.
To get the best performance, you need to use Windows servers and clients. Dear Jacky, you may be right that you get the best performance with SMB in a pure Windows only environment.
In my opinion this is not realistic. Mixed environments like having Windows clients and Linux file servers or vice versa is not uncommon. In that case NFS shows a better performance. Thank you! On ubuntu There is no big advantage. NFS is only better for small or medium sized files. The system that I will be building here soon uses many small files in a Read Only environment.
So from the looks of it, the NFS is the better choice. We use it with single, multiple streams, and IP aliasing to maximize storage throughput. Would you mind if I took a screen shot of the benchmark itself for some project documentation I have to write for school?
Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It only takes a minute to sign up. I have a server with NFSv4. I am mounting contents of the home folder of remote user to local host. Able to read and write contents, but when I am checking ownership of files at the mounted volume from the local host, they all belongs to corresponding remote user and group Is there any way to make it look like they belong to the local user and group on the local host?
You need to have bob account on the both hosts - client and server. Nevertheless, the numeric ID's can be different. You have all the pieces there. What you wrote forced those values to be If you changed tothe nfs server on the remote host would make everythingand access should be granted. Sign up to join this community. Just give it a try and enter your LDAP details. If it fails you still can login using the 'local' synology username and password. LDAP seems to work. At least I see users and groups.
But my LDAP does not store any valid passwords, but principal names. Authentication is done via Keberos in my infrastructure. Hope that helps. I have DSM4. Did you have to activate that?
